Sony Pictures to be distributor for Curse of the Golden Flower in America
Good news has been reported for Chow Yun-Fat's latest movie Curse of the Golden Flower. Sony Pictures did a wonderful job on the distribution of his movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which was one of the factors in it being successful in the U.S. By Gregg Goldstein Tue Jun 27, 12:13 AM ET
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - International stars Chow Yun-Fat ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") and Gong Li ("Memoirs of a Geisha") soon will be returning to American shores.
Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American and Latin American rights to "House of Flying Daggers" director Zhang Yimou's martial-arts romantic drama "Curse of the Golden Flower."
The feature, shooting in China, follows the medieval saga of a dysfunctional royal family led by a king (Chow) and queen (Gong) engaged in power struggles with their three sons and each other.
Zhang's "Daggers" and "Hero" action choreographer, Tony Ching Siu-Tung, returns for similar duties on this film, which also reunites the director with Gong ("Raise the Red Lantern," "Shanghai Triad"). This is the director's ninth project with Sony Pictures Classics, which hasn't yet set a release date for the film.
"We feel 'Curse of the Golden Flower' will be a culmination of Zhang Yimou's great career," SPC co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard said. The execs worked with Kong on "Daggers" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," SPC's biggest hit.

New release of Peace Hotel
Second bit of DVD info for the day, and we're staying with Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo for the film that is being billed as Chow's last before he packed his bags for Hollywood.
Chow (Hard Boiled, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) plays a legendary killer who slaughters his entire gang after the death of his wife. As penance, he opens the Peace Hotel, a sanctuary for criminals, seedy characters and anyone seeking safety. As long as patrons can make their way to the hotel, they are allowed to stay indefinitely and The Killer guarantees their protection.
After several peaceful years, an arrogant female thief (Cecilia Yip) telling outlandish lies barges into the hotel - with an angry posse hot on her heels. The posse accuses the woman of murdering their chief and vows to attack the hotel unless the woman gives herself up. Torn between his golden rule of never asking anyone to leave and his vow to protect the patrons of his haven, The Killer prepares for a blazing showdown.
The DVD is in stores from June 26th.
