China refuse to clear movie shoot
“The film is about Shanghai at that period. Shanghai is a character in the film, its human side, what was so unique about it. There must have been a misunderstanding and I hope they reconsider their decision,” Medavoy (the producer) said in an e-mail. “This obviously comes as a shock to all of us. We don’t know exactly why we have been turned down,” director Mikael Hafstrom was quoted as saying by Hollywood trade publication Variety’s Asian news Web site. Asked about the reported relocation, Medavoy said the decision would be made by production company The Weinstein Co., which didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment. Calls to China’s Film Bureau rang unanswered.
