Chow Yun-Fat's charitable activities

The earthquake of 12th May has had a terrible effect on Sichuan Province. Chinese people all over the world are feeling great anguish at this time......Chinese international film star Chow Yun Fat is no exception; living as he does in Hong Kong, he spends every day thinking about the earthquake, and finds it difficult to sleep at night, constantly thinking about the people affected, passing through a crisis every morning, rebuilding the homeland. But because of his personal make-up, he does not tell other people about this, so that in the past few days there have been people who have thought badly of him, and have said that because he is a big international star he should accept some of the burden. This reporter knows what people everywhere understand, that Fat Go does many good deeds but does not speak of them. Sources close to Fat Go have revealed to this reporter that after the earthquake Fat Go quickly made a donation, but he would not reveal the amount; furthermore he was willing to do everything he could for the earthquake victims. They also said that it was the duty of every Chinese person, to do their utmost, and that this was the expression of each Chinese person's conscience, that doing things for the earthquake victims was not news.

Fat Go is enthusiastic towards public charitable efforts, and early in the century he joined with Johnny To to establish an artists' institute. He gives help to a retirement home for the elderly; moreover as everyone knows Chow Yun Fat to this day supports a dozen or so orphans. He has entrusted an excellent home with the task of bringing up these orphans, and he has never seen them, only providing generous financial support for them. The reason for this is that he is not willing for the whole world to know that these orphans are the subject of Chow Yun Fat's charity. If it wasn't for the children's home having revealed this relationship, the world still would not know about Chow Yun Fat's magnanimous act for the public good. Furthermore, in past years Fat Go has announced that he will leave the whole of his personal estate to charitable causes, providing help for those in need.

UPDATE: THE RED CIRCLE

Among Studio Canal's high-end projects, Johnny To's $35 million "Red Circle" now has a start date of Sept. 20.
Beyond Hollywood.com reports:
The film in question is called “Red Circle”, a remake of the 1970 French crime thriller by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Alain Delon. While Chow Yun-Fat and Liam Neeson are currently in negotiations to star in the film, The Hollywood Reporter reports that the offer has also gone out to Orlando Bloom to join the cast. To will direct, while his longtime collaborator Wai Ka-Fai (”Full-Time Killer”, among many) will write the script.
Here’s the plot of the original from IMDB.com:
Corey is a cool, aristocratic thief, released from prison on the same day that Vogel, a murderer, escapes from the custody of the patient Mattei, a cat-loving police superintendent. Corey robs Rico, his mob boss, then enlists Vogel and an ex-police sharpshooter, Jansen, in a jewel heist. While Corey is harried by the vengeful Rico, Mattei pressures Santi, a nightclub owner and pimp, to help him trap the thieves. Over all hangs the judgment of the police directeur, that every man is guilty.
If the deal goes through, and To does end up directing, this will be his most expensive to date. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is budgeted at a hefty $40 million. Media Asia and France’s Studio Canal will co-produce/finance the project.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHOW YUN-FAT

This interview was put up in Baidu by lengyanleng
An interview with Chow Yun Fat cannot be described in a few words........

First stop....roast goose Landscape photography is 90% hanging about. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon the sun is too high, the view is not sufficiently beautiful, Chow Yun Fat sits in a spacious people carrier, and suggests we go and eat something. At the door of the restaurant the owner greets us, Chow Yun Fat waves his hand and says, "Today I'm bring a friend to eat roast goose [a favourite quick snack in Hong Kong] He goes towards the cooked meat counter. The owner smiles at lets him through, one can tell they know each other well. I have met many artists, and it is often a headache to arrange. They will say "We can't meet in a public place, there will be too many fans; a restaurant would also be too public......" Chow Yun Fat proved that a big star could happily share a couple of plates of food and a bowl of soup. Other people in the restaurant eagerly asked for his photo, and Chow Yun Fat first of all asked where they were from - some came from Fujian Province..... people from many different places all asked for a photo. [He asked them] to wait until everyone had eaten their fill, there was no rush, everyone showing great mutual respect, and everyone was happy. This could be called inappropriate, but then the real question is who is more famous than Chow Yun Fat? [Ask the famous people who say it is inappropriate, can they remember the time when it would have been appropriate?] Chow Yun Fat smiled and said: "If by any chance in a public place was closed and there were no people, perhaps there would be fewer people asking for autographs and photos, but it would seem very empty. In all the world the stars of Hong Kong are the most apprehensive." "Artists are swayed much more by the general public than the general public are swayed by artists. There are people who have supported you for 30 years, who by chance have the opportunity to see you in the flesh for the first time; if you don't stir, that is to say you want to retain your privacy in your free time, how can you justify this?

UPDATE: "THE CHILDREN OF HUANG SHI"

04/30/08) Director Roger Spottiswoode talks about the complication during filming in China:
"You can't get dailies (quickly processed footage of the previous day's shoot) in China, the labs aren't very good, so we processed in Melbourne. The film was shipped back as DVD but they censor everything, so of course the DVDs never arrive or take months to arrive. "You finish shooting before you see any dailies, but my editor, Geoff Lamb, would cut away at Digital Pictures and within a day everything I'd shot the day before he would have edited and put it up as a podcast. All the way through the shoot, no matter how remote we were, I at least was seeing cut film all the way through."
